FSK Tape vs Aluminum Foil Tape: Which One for Your Duct?

It is the question we are asked most often before an order is placed: the drawing says “aluminium tape”, the store has two silver rolls on the shelf, and nobody is sure which one belongs on the duct. The two products look almost identical. They are not.

Below is a straight comparison between Q Tape Aluminum FSK Tape and Q Tape Aluminum Foil Tape, using the numbers from their own data sheets, followed by a simple rule for choosing between them.

The difference is one layer

Aluminium foil tape is exactly what the name says: a layer of aluminium foil coated with adhesive. FSK tape takes that same foil and laminates it to a fibreglass scrim and a kraft paper backing. That extra reinforcement changes almost every mechanical property of the finished tape — and it is why the two are not interchangeable on a specification.

What those numbers mean on site

Strength and stability: FSK wins

FSK is roughly twice as thick and carries about 37% more tensile strength, but the figure that decides most arguments is elongation: 2% for FSK against 5% for foil. Less stretch means the tape stays where it was placed. Across a long duct run that goes through daily thermal cycling, a tape that creeps is a tape that eventually opens at the edge.

Conformability: foil wins

That same flexibility is an advantage the moment the surface stops being flat. Plain foil tape stretches into a radius, wraps a pipe elbow, and follows an irregular fitting without wrinkling or tenting. Try to force FSK around a tight bend and the scrim will fight you, leaving bridged edges that never fully bond.

Adhesion: read both figures together

Foil tape shows the higher adhesion to steel (27.04 vs 23.2 N/25mm), while FSK shows more than double the initial adhesion reading (8.5 cm vs 4 cm on PSTC-6 / ASTM D 3121). In practice: FSK grabs harder the moment it touches the facing, which is what you want when you are working overhead on duct wrap; foil builds a slightly stronger ultimate bond on bare metal.

Fire testing: same result, different standard

Both products return a flame spread and smoke developed index of zero, but they are tested under different standards — FSK to ANSI/UL723, foil to ASTM E84-21a. If your specification names one of those standards explicitly, match it. A consultant reviewing a submittal will check the standard, not only the score.

The simple rule

Choose Aluminum FSK Tape when:

• You are sealing joints and seams on FSK-faced duct wrap or insulation board.
• The tape forms part of the vapour barrier and will be inspected as such.
• The surface is flat or gently curved and the run is long and straight.
• The specification calls for a reinforced tape or references ANSI/UL723.

Choose Aluminum Foil Tape when:

• You are working around elbows, take-offs, valves and irregular shapes.
• You are sealing directly onto bare sheet metal or foil-faced pipe insulation.
• You need to patch, repair or reflect heat on a surface that is not flat.
• The specification references ASTM E84.

What they have in common

Both tapes use the same high-strength solvent acrylic adhesive and share the same tested service range of −30 °C to 120 °C (ASTM C1136), with an application range of −12 °C to 120 °C. Both are manufactured in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the same process, so a project that approves one will find the other consistent in quality.

If you are still deciding, the safe answer on a faced-insulation package is FSK for the straight work and a roll of foil tape on the van for the fittings. Most experienced HVAC crews carry both.
