What Is FSK Tape? Foil, Scrim and Kraft Explained

On most HVAC sites, tape is treated as a consumable — something you grab off the van and stick on a duct. Then a year later the insulation is damp, the joints are open, and nobody can explain why the system is not holding its design temperature. More often than not, the wrong tape was specified.

FSK tape is one of the few products in an HVAC package that is genuinely engineered, layer by layer, for a single job: sealing and protecting thermal insulation. Here is what it is made of, what each layer does, and how to read its data sheet before you approve it for a project.

What FSK actually stands for

FSK is short for Foil, Scrim, Kraft — the three layers bonded together to form the backing of the tape:

1. The aluminium foil face

The outer layer is aluminium foil. It gives the tape its reflective silver finish, but its real job is to stop water vapour. Foil is effectively impermeable, so a properly applied foil face turns a taped joint into a continuous part of the vapour barrier rather than a hole in it.

2. The fibreglass scrim

Sandwiched in the middle is a mesh of fibreglass threads. This is the layer that makes FSK tape behave differently from a plain foil tape. It carries the tensile load, so the tape resists tearing when it is pulled taut across a joint, and it stops the tape from stretching and creeping over time.

3. The kraft paper backing

The inner kraft layer stabilises the laminate, gives it body during application, and matches the facing material used on most duct wrap and board insulation — which is why an FSK tape sits flush and bonds well to an FSK facing.

Why the scrim is the part that matters

The number to look at is elongation. Q Tape Aluminum FSK tape elongates 2% before failure (PSTC-131 / ASTM D 3759), against a tensile strength of 197.01 N/25mm. A low elongation figure is a good thing here: it means the tape holds its position across a joint instead of slowly stretching as the duct expands, contracts and vibrates through thousands of thermal cycles.

That dimensional stability is the whole point of the scrim. A tape that stretches eventually pulls away at the edges, and once an edge lifts, moisture has a path into the insulation.

The vapour barrier job

In a hot, humid climate the pressure difference is the opposite of what many installers assume: warm moist air outside is constantly trying to push into cold ducts. Wherever it reaches a cold surface, it condenses. Wet insulation loses much of its thermal value and does not dry out inside a sealed duct.

The insulation manufacturer supplies a facing to prevent exactly that — and then the installer cuts it every time a joint is made. FSK tape restores the barrier at those joints. That is why it is specified by facing type rather than by colour or width.

The temperature range you should be checking

Two different numbers appear on every good tape data sheet, and they are not interchangeable:

  • Application temperature range — how cold or hot the surface may be when you apply the tape. For Q Tape FSK: −12 °C to 120 °C.
  • Post-application temperature range — what the bonded tape can survive in service. For Q Tape FSK: −30 °C to 120 °C, tested to ASTM C1136.

Both are tested, and the gap between them is where most site failures start. A tape applied to a surface that is outside its application range may look fine on the day and release weeks later, because the adhesive never properly wetted the surface in the first place.

Fire performance is not optional

Anything installed inside a plenum or a shaft has to answer for its surface burning characteristics. Q Tape Aluminum FSK tape carries a flame spread index of 0 and a smoke developed index of 0 when tested to ANSI/UL723, and the FSK product is UL certified to that standard. On a project where the consultant asks for a fire-rated submittal, this is the line they will look for first.

When FSK is the right call — and when it is not

Specify FSK for sealing joints and seams in faced duct insulation, closing the seam on insulated pipework, repairing torn facing, and anywhere the tape is part of the vapour barrier.

Look elsewhere when you need to conform tightly around a tight radius or an irregular fitting — a plain aluminium foil tape stretches into those shapes far better, precisely because it has no scrim holding it straight.
